Canada ranks fourth
Canada ranks fourth out of 182 in new UN quality-of-life index
Canada ranks among the top places to live in the world, according to the United Nations, which released its quality-of-life index yesterday, placing Canada fourth among 182 rated countries. Canada was bested by Norway, which took the top spot, followed by Australia and Iceland. Canada ranked third last year. Officially called the human development index, it measures criteria such as life expectancy, literacy, school enrolment, gender parity and the economy to get a snap shot of a country's quality of life. With a life expectancy of 80.6 years, Canada ranked 11th in the category, which was led by Japan at 82.7 years. Afghanistan, where Canadian troops are fighting, ranked 181st in the world. Life expectancy in Afghanistan ranked 172nd at 43.6 years of age. The United States ranked 13th. Niger ranked last. Canada last placed first in 2000.
